How long do cultured pearls last? Lifespan and care

Wie lange halten Zuchtperlen bei guter Pflege?

In short: Well-cared-for cultured pearls can last for many decades and are often passed down through generations. However, because pearls are a natural product, their lifespan depends heavily on how you wear and store them.

What determines their lifespan

1. The quality of the nacre

The thicker and more even the nacre layer, the more resistant the pearl. Freshwater pearls are usually made almost entirely of nacre and are therefore relatively robust. Find out more under Freshwater or Akoya Pearls.

2. The setting

A neatly crafted setting made of sterling silver or gold vermeil protects the pearl and holds it securely. In knotted pearl strands, the silk thread is the weak point – it should be replaced every few years.

3. How you wear them

Pearls are softer than most gemstones. Over time, perfume, creams, sweat, chlorine and friction against hard materials take a toll on them.

Small habits that make a big difference

  • Last on, first off: Put them on only after perfume, makeup and hairspray.
  • Wipe them after wearing: With a soft, dry cloth.
  • No water: Take them off before showering, swimming and exercising. Find out more: Can you shower with pearls?
  • No harsh chemicals: No ultrasonic cleaning, no jewelry cleaners, no vinegar.

Store them properly

Keep them separately in a soft pouch so that nothing gets scratched – but not airtight, because pearls need a little humidity. You can find detailed tips under Caring for pearl necklaces.

How to tell that pearls need care

  • The luster looks dull or chalky.
  • The surface feels rough or shows fine scratches.
  • In knotted strands: The thread is discolored or gaps are forming between the pearls.

Slight dullness can often be improved with a soft cloth. For more severe damage, a jeweler can help.

Can you wear cultured pearls every day?

Yes – pearls even stay more beautiful when worn than when left in a drawer. The important thing is to follow the basic rules. Stud earrings and necklaces that are exposed to little friction are particularly suitable for everyday wear, such as the Pearl Necklace with Crystal Halo, the Owl Necklace or the Baroque Pearl Drop Earrings. Rings and bracelets are more heavily used and need a little more attention.
