Pearls are formed in shells from nacre – many paper-thin layers of calcium and organic material. These very layers create their characteristic luster. However, they are also softer and more delicate than most gemstones. With the right care, your pearl necklace will still look beautiful for years.
The most important rule: put it on last, take it off first
Perfume, hairspray, makeup and creams contain alcohol, acids and oils that will dull the luster of pearls over time. Therefore, only put on your pearl jewelry after you have finished getting ready – and take it off first.
Cleaning after wearing
- Wipe the pearls with a soft, dry cloth after every wear. This removes skin oils and residue before they become firmly attached.
- If they are heavily soiled, slightly dampen a cloth with water, gently wipe the pearls, and blot them dry immediately.
- No dishwashing liquid, no toothpaste, no vinegar, no jewelry cleaning baths and no ultrasonic cleaners – all of these can damage the nacre.
Proper storage
- Store pearls separately in a soft pouch or their own compartment. Metal edges and stones from other jewelry can scratch the surface.
- Pearls need a little humidity. Airtight plastic bags and safes with very dry air are not ideal in the long term.
- It is best to store long pearl strands lying flat rather than hanging them up, so that the thread does not stretch.
Water, sports and everyday life
Showering, swimming, saunas and sports are not a good idea for pearl jewelry. Chlorine, salt water, soap and sweat damage the surface. You can read more about this in our article Can you shower with pearls?
Pearls on silver or gold chains
Many modern pearl necklaces – such as our Pearl Necklace with Crystal Halo or the Owl Necklace with Freshwater Pearl – feature a pearl on a metal chain instead of a silk thread. In this case, care for the pearl as described above and the chain with a soft cloth. Rhodium-plated silver rarely tarnishes; you should only use a silver polishing cloth on the metal and never on the pearl.
Strung pearl necklaces
For classic strands where the pearls are knotted onto silk, it is worth having a professional inspect them every few years. A stretched or discolored thread should be re-strung before it breaks.
