Sterling silver or stainless steel: Which is better?

Appearance and style

Sterling silver has a warm, bright shine that is characteristic of precious metal. Because silver is easy to shape, delicate settings, pearls and stones can be incorporated. Stainless steel looks slightly cooler and more technical – ideal for minimalist, robust pieces.

Durability in everyday use

Stainless steel is harder and withstands knocks better. Silver develops fine scratches over time, which are part of its patina and can be polished out. One advantage of silver: It can be repaired, resized or re-polished.

Care

Stainless steel requires almost no care. Silver can tarnish, but can easily be cleaned with a silver polishing cloth. Rhodium-plated silver has a protective layer and stays bright for a long time. Find out more under Caring for silver jewelry.

Skin compatibility

High-quality sterling silver usually contains no nickel. Stainless steel usually contains nickel, but it is firmly bound – not a problem for many people, but a risk for those with a severe nickel allergy. Find the details under Jewelry for sensitive skin.

What is right for you?

  • Sterling silver, if you value precious metal, fine designs, pearls or gemstones and are looking for jewelry as a meaningful gift.
  • Stainless steel, if you are looking for robust, low-maintenance jewelry for sports and everyday wear and your budget is the main priority.

Our jewelry

At The Uniquora, we use 925 sterling silver – often rhodium-plated or finished with gold vermeil. This also makes fine settings with pearls and moissanite possible, such as the Memoire ring with moissanite, the Owl necklace with freshwater pearl or the solid Cuban chain.
