“Silver” is written on many pieces of jewelry – but not all of them contain real silver. These seven characteristics will help you identify whether you have high-quality silver jewelry before you.
1. The hallmark: 925
Genuine sterling silver usually bears a hallmark with “925” or “S925”. This means 92.5% pure silver, with the remainder usually being copper for added strength. Pure silver would be too soft for jewelry. On very delicate pieces, the hallmark may sometimes be missing due to space constraints – in such cases, the retailer’s information is what counts.
2. Solid, silver-plated, or just silver-colored?
- Solid sterling silver: Made entirely from 925 silver.
- Silver-plated: A base metal with a thin layer of silver that wears off.
- Silver-colored or “silver-look”: Usually brass, zinc, or stainless steel – no silver.
We explain the difference between stainless steel and silver in Sterling Silver or Stainless Steel.
3. Rhodium Plating and Vermeil
High-quality silver is often enhanced: Rhodium plating means it has a protective layer of rhodium that prevents tarnishing and gives it a bright shine. Gold vermeil is a thick layer of gold on sterling silver. Both are signs of quality.
4. Weight
Silver is relatively heavy. Solid pieces such as a solid silver Cuban chain feel noticeably heavy in the hand. If a large piece feels unusually light, it is often hollow or made of another metal.
5. Workmanship
- Clean edges without burrs.
- A smooth surface without bubbles or discoloration.
- Stones are securely set in their settings and do not wobble.
- For pearls: The pearl is securely attached without visible glue.
6. Clasps and Details
A sturdy lobster clasp or spring ring clasp, neatly finished loops, and secure stud earrings show that attention has also been paid to the details.
7. Transparent Information
A reputable retailer clearly states the material, finish, dimensions, and stones in the product description. With us, you will find this information for every product under “Details” and “Material & Care”.
Tarnishing Is Not a Defect
When silver darkens, it is a natural reaction – and even an indication that it is real silver. You can find out how to make it shine again in Caring for Silver Jewelry.
