Men's Signet Rings: Meaning, Which Finger and Buying Tips

Siegelring für Herren aus 925er Silber mit Fleur-de-Lis

The signet ring is one of the oldest pieces of men's jewelry – and it is making a strong comeback. It looks striking without being loud and works with a suit just as well as with jeans and a T-shirt.

Where does the signet ring come from?

Originally the signet ring was a tool: its engraved crest or symbol was pressed into wax to seal letters and documents. It stood for identity, heritage and trustworthiness. Today you wear it mainly as an expression of your style – often with a symbol that means something to you.

Which finger do you wear a signet ring on?

Traditionally it is worn on the little finger of your non-writing hand. There it gets in the way least in everyday life and still stands out. Today, however, there are no fixed rules:

  • Little finger: the classic – elegant and understated
  • Ring finger: more prominent – make sure it isn't mistaken for a wedding ring
  • Index finger: for a confident, fashion-forward look

Which size and face fit you?

The ring face should suit your hand. On slim hands and the little finger, smaller faces look more balanced; larger hands can carry a wider face. When it comes to ring size: a signet ring is heavier on top, so it shouldn't sit too loosely, otherwise it will turn.

Not sure about the size? Adjustable models can be fitted individually – ideal as a gift when you don't know the ring size.

Silver, oxidized or enamel?

  • Polished 925 sterling silver: classic and versatile
  • Oxidized silver: dark recesses make engravings stand out – for a vintage look
  • With black enamel: strong contrast and a modern design

How to care for your silver ring

Silver can tarnish over time. Clean your ring regularly with a soft silver polishing cloth and store it dry. Don't use silver dips on oxidized rings, as they remove the intentional dark patina.
