Cleaning and caring for silver jewelry: How to do it properly

Silberschmuck Pflege leicht und stilvoll

Silver is beautiful, but it reacts with the air: over time, it becomes darker. The good news: with the right care, tarnished silver can quickly be bright again – and a few habits can prevent it from tarnishing in the first place.

Why silver tarnishes

Silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air to form silver sulfide – the dark layer. Moisture, sweat, perfume, creams, and certain foods such as eggs or onions accelerate this process. This is not a quality issue, but a sign of genuine silver.

Everyday care

  • Put on jewelry only after applying perfume and cream.
  • Take it off before exercising, going to the sauna, swimming, or cleaning.
  • After wearing, wipe it briefly with a soft cloth.
  • Store it in a dry and, if possible, airtight place – find out more under Storing jewelry.
  • Wear it regularly: silver that is worn tarnishes more slowly.

How to clean silver gently

  1. Silver polishing cloth: The best method for light tarnishing. Simply polish with gentle pressure.
  2. Lukewarm soapy water: For grease and dirt. Clean carefully with a soft toothbrush, rinse thoroughly, and dry immediately.
  3. Specialist silver care products: For heavier tarnishing. Follow the instructions carefully.

Home remedies: what helps and what causes damage?

  • Baking soda and aluminum foil: Works well for heavy tarnishing, but is only suitable for solid silver without stones, pearls, or coatings.
  • Toothpaste: It is best to avoid it – it contains abrasive particles that leave fine scratches.
  • Vinegar or lemon: Acids can damage stones, pearls, and adhesive bonds.

Special precautions

  • Pearls: Never soak them in water or use a silver polishing cloth on a pearl. Find out more under Caring for pearl necklaces.
  • Rhodium-plated silver: Clean only gently with a soft cloth to preserve the protective layer.
  • Gold-plated silver and gold vermeil: Do not use a silver polishing cloth – it can wear away the gold layer. Read Caring for gold vermeil for more information.
  • Oxidized or blackened silver: The dark surface is intentional. Wipe only with a dry cloth; do not soak.

How often to clean?

Jewelry worn daily: wipe briefly after wearing and clean thoroughly every few weeks. Jewelry worn rarely: polish briefly before wearing.

When to see a jeweler?

For very heavy tarnishing, deep scratches, or loose stones, professional cleaning and inspection are worthwhile.
