Layering – wearing several necklaces at once – looks casual yet thoughtful. A few simple rules help keep the look from appearing cluttered.
The formula: three lengths
- Base (approx. 40 cm): A fine, short necklace close to the neck – simple or with a small pendant.
- Middle (approx. 45 cm): A necklace with a focal point, such as a pendant or pearl.
- Long (from approx. 60 cm): A longer necklace that adds depth.
Important: Leave about 3–5 cm between the necklaces so that each remains visible and they are less likely to tangle.
Lengths that work well together
- Short: The Owl Necklace with Freshwater Pearl is adjustable from 40 to 45 cm – ideal as the top layer.
- Pre-layered: The Two-Strand Necklace with Baroque Pearl features two lengths in one piece.
- Long: The Long Necklace with Brushed Silver Disc, the Long Necklace with Silver Leaves, or the Long Beaded Necklace (88 cm).
Materials and colors
- One metal color looks calm and elegant.
- Mixed silver and gold look modern – ideally with a unifying element such as a pearl. Learn more about Silver or Gold.
- Different chain styles – fine, twisted, beaded – make layering more interesting.
Pearls in layered looks
Pearls add softness to the look and connect different metals. A single pearl on a fine chain looks modern, such as the Crescent Pearl Necklace.
Substantial pendants
No more than one large pendant per look. The other necklaces should remain simple or feature small details.
Layering and necklines
- V-neck: Ideal – the necklaces follow the V-shape.
- Crew neck: The shortest necklace sits just above the neckline.
- Shirt or blouse: Leave the top button undone and wear two fine necklaces.
- Turtleneck: Long necklaces over the sweater.
When it becomes too much
More than three or four necklaces, several large pendants, or eye-catching earrings to match can make the look feel overwhelmed. In such cases, remove one layer. You can find more tips under Which Necklace Looks Particularly Elegant?
